“My intent is to bring memories back to older people. My paintings often bring a smile to people, sometimes a tear will show up, with the phrase that follows – I remember.” ~ Michael Litvack

Michael Litvack

80-year-old artist Michael Litvack was born in Montreal and continues to live and paint in Montreal. The artist has been mostly self-taught.

“My family was always on the move, I have lived in many neighbourhoods of Montreal, my family had grocery stores, charcuteries, and supermarkets in many small Quebec towns. I was exposed to people from all over the world, learning their food tastes, and habits.

My father attended Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal where I picked up his skills. I acted as my University’s cartoonist, drawing for the newspaper, and making posters. I took one University art course just to see if perhaps I should delve into the art world as a profession.

I ended up in my family’s food business after graduation. Our food stores were of many sorts and I met famous people from all over the world. I shifted my attention to working a 7 day work week, putting the art world aside. For decades I was collecting music from the Swing world, buying records by the pound, not by the label. I shifted from having food stores to being a food representative, having more time on my hands.

Once I retired from the food business, I turned back to painting full-time and pursued the scenes that I was familiar with. When I lost my hearing ability, painting really became the center of my life. I am amazed that people from all over the world buy my paintings.

My intent is to bring memories back to older people. My paintings often bring a smile to people, sometimes a tear will show up, with the phrase that follows, “I remember”. ~  Michael Litvack
