In his 85th year, celebrated Canadian artist Tony Urquhart, continues to create fascinating and mysterious landscapes in a career that has spanned over six decades. As a mature artist Tony Urquhart continues to thrive and push the boundaries of contemporary painting and sculpture in Canada. Influenced by the natural landscape and his sojourns in Europe, Urquhart creates brilliantly colourful and imaginary landscapes such as this gorgeous painting “My Garden with Rainbow, 1999” reproduced above.
Tony Urquhart’s art career boasts an impressive exhibition history. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous international art exhibitions such as the Guggenheim International of 1958, in the company of other notable Canadian artists including Jean Paul Riopelle, Jack Shadbolt, Charles Gagnon, and Graham Coughtry. Throughout his remarkable career Urquhart’s paintings and sculpture have been included in important early Canadian biennale exhibitions and numerous solo and group exhibitions across Canada. In 2009, Tony was the winner of the Governor Genera’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Tony Urquhart shares an important place in Canadian art history along side his peers such as Kazuo Nakamura, William Ronald, Michael Snow, Joyce Wieland, Jack Chambers and Greg Curnoe.
